Frequently Asked uestions

What type of water can the Scout purify?

The Scout is designed to produce safe drinking water from both seawater and freshwater sources. It handles river, lake, and bore water as easily as seawater, using advanced reverse osmosis and UV sterilisation. It’s not suitable for stagnant or visibly contaminated water (e.g., blue-green algae blooms).

How much water can it produce?

The Scout comes in two models. We have the ultra compact 10 litre per hour system and the slightly larger unit which can produces up to 20 litres per hour of fresh, drinkable water from seawater. Enough to sustain 2–4 people indefinitely. In freshwater mode, production rates are even higher.

How much water do I need — is the Scout big enough for me?

For most crews, yes. A practical rule is 5–10 L per person/day for drinking + cooking (add more if you’re doing long showers).

At 20 L/h, Scout makes:

  • 40 L in 2 h (2 people, a full day’s drinking/cooking)

  • 60 L in 3 h (3–4 people, light dishwashing)

  • 100 L in 5 h (family/day-trip top-up)

Because it’s 12 V, you can let it tick away while you sail, fish, or sit at anchor—no generator sessions needed. That “background trickle” quietly keeps you topped up.

Why choose a small 12 V unit over a 100 LPH system?

You’ll use it more, and that’s the point.

  • No generator or engine hours: run it whenever—quiet, low-stress, no fuel burn.

  • Real-world convenience: background production beats “big bursts” you have to schedule around noise, heat and neighbours.

  • Lower complexity & cost: fewer heavy AC components, simpler install, easier spares.

  • Battery/solar friendly: ideal for alternator while driving or daytime solar; it just hums along.

  • Lower purchase Price: Our systems are approximately half the price of larger AC units.

How is the Scout powered?

Scout runs on 12 V DC power, so you can connect it directly to a vehicle’s Anderson plug, solar setup, or portable battery. It draws roughly 200–250 W (21A), meaning it can be powered by most 4WD, caravan, or marine battery systems without modification.
For most of our customers it runs on the excess solar produced by their systems.
No need to run your motor or generator.

What maintenance does it need?

Scout is designed for simple, field-ready maintenance. After each use, a short freshwater flush helps preserve the membranes. Filters are easily replaceable, and the system can be fully serviced using standard tools (which we provide with each unit). LEDI offers complete service kits and step-by-step guides for owners.

What’s included with the Scout? (Do I need anything else to start making water?)

Short answer: you’re good to go on day one. No generator, no plumbing, no extra bits, start using within 2 minutes.

In the box:

  • Scout 12 V RO unit (10 or 20 L/h from seawater)

  • Power lead with Anderson plug (12 V DC, plug-and-play)

  • Intake kit: food-grade suction hose + mesh strainer

  • Pre-filtration: installed 5 um pre-filters pre-installed + spares

  • Product hose (drinking-water safe) + brine hose

  • Preservative, Descale and Cleaning chemicals for pickling and storing the unit.

  • Quick-start guide + full owner’s manual (AUS support)

Why this matters: everything’s sized for quiet 12 V, run-in-the-background use. You don’t have to fire up a genset or main engine like many 100 L/h AC systems. Just plug in, drop the intake, and let it quietly top up while you get on with the day.

Do you offer a Warranty

Yes! Every purchase comes with full technical support, locally available spare parts and 12 months warranty. Because the units are so small and easy to ship, we also offer free labour on a factory servicing after the first 12 months. One of the real benefits to buying  Australian made is the life-long support we offer.

DIY unit vs Scout 12V — what should I know?

It’s popular for the sticker price, but if you care about reliability and drinking-water safety, there are a few realities to weigh up.

Real-world cost: Once you add a pressure washer + generator/inverter + RCD/IP electrics + mounts/UV/flush gear + your time, the total is often similar to a complete 12 V unit—and you still live with noise, fuel, scheduling, bulky installs and limited support.

Real-world safety: Many pressure-washer pumps use plastic/aluminium wet ends and non-food-grade oil. In seawater duty they commonly see ~150–200 hours before issues, and as seals wear, trace oil can enter the feed water, this may occur long before the system stops working. This is not okay to consume.

Why crews choose Scout 12 V

  • No genset sessions: ~200–250 W @ 12 V; runs quietly off solar/alternator/house batteries while you get on with your day.

  • 316 stainless pressure pump: Oil-free, built for long service life.

  • Lower hassle, higher uptime: Purpose-built, steady RO flowplug-and-go instead of weeks of tinkering.

  • Safer around water: Keeps 240 V out of wet spaces (no extra RCD/IP work).

  • Built in UV Sterilisation: LED so no need to change globes
